Samsung Galaxy R officially announced for Europe and Asia and the phone is a step down in tech specs compared the forthcoming Galaxy S 2. Galaxy R will house a 1GHz Tegra 2 CPU, a 4.2-inch WVGA (800 x 480) Super Clear LCD, dual 5MP / 2MP cameras in the rear and front and Gingerbread with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. The apps both climb to version 2.0 and perhaps a bit more important, they both include worthwhile improvements and cablevision customers can now experience hundreds of channels of live television, thousands of titles of video on demand and other features on all three devices……………

HTC has officially opened the doors to HTCDev.com, its new developer portal and the future home for all bootloader unlocking tools and HTCDev consists of guidance and tutorials for coding for HTC smartphones, as well as the HTC OpenSense SDK framework. Blair outlined that the development portal will offer SDK, tutorials, sample code, binaries, kernel source code and specific HTC APIs for use with the EVO 3D, and the HTC Pen SDK. The launch of HTCdev is an interesting move and by this developers now have access to a number of different tools which will allow them to create applications using the OpenSense platform………….

Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and XpanD finally team up for an active 3D glasses standard and CEA is playing catch up on the IR glasses problem, but many of the new HDTVs for 2011 are using Bluetooth technology to keep their glasses in sync, again without any promise of cross-manufacturer compatibility. The companies are announcing the Full HD Glasses Initiative, which should lay down a standard for consumer active shutter glasses to communicate over Bluetooth or IR and the new glasses should be backwards compatible with this year’s TVs, although early adopters from 2010 have no such guarantee……………

Operating Systems Solutions is suing Apple over OS X’s fast booting operation using a patent originally owned by LG Electronics, a method of utilizing boot configuration information from earlier booting processes to speed the system startup process and the assignment on the patent has changed hands multiple times dating back to 2004. There is still some speculation as to how Operating Systems Solutions acquired the patent andApple has been a lightning rod for lawsuits over the last several years……………..

Apple has been known to offer education exclusive machines for schools and it seems they have stayed true to the practice with the recent launch of a 21-inch iMac for $999. The cheaper iMac is designed for education institutions only, which means individuals cannot purchase the computer at the discounted rate and the new model sports a 3.1ghz i3, 2 gigs of ram and 250 gigs of hard drive space. Apple currently plans on launching the iMac on 16th of August, that date could change though not by much and expect launch of the device near the middle to end of August…………

Details of RIM’s first QNX-based smartphone, the BlackBerry Colt have leaked with the handset supposedly on course for a Q1 2012 release and this smartphone is currently in testing with RIM’s software verification team and looks to be powered by a 1GHz single-core processor. The Colt is said to be contrary to promises of including dual-core CPUs and the maiden voyage of the smartphone platform may be completely devoid of BES at the device’s launch…………..

Skype has released Skype 5.3, an update to its Mac software which brings support for OS X Lion and HD Video Calls and the jump to support Lion comes some three weeks after the release of Apple’s latest Mac OS X iteration. Skype reccomends a minimum upload speed of 1.5mB/s to use the HD video calling feature and made official support for Lion should fix some bugs that people have been experiencing. The upgrade to support Lion is a welcome one and although the much-maligned Mac interface has not recieved any significant changes in 5.3 and the HD video calling is also a great upgrade…………

10-year-old girl discovers age old flaw in iOS and Android games, she discovered a zero day exploit in iOS and Android games that would allow her to speed time in game thus growing things faster. The 10 year old girl CyFi revealed this exploit at DefCon Kids and this zero day exploit is related to the clock in games which are used to measure the time it takes for a crop to grow, much like farmville. CyFi’s discovery has since been verified by independent security researchers and the exploit has been found to work in versions of games for both Apple and Android gadgets………….

A hacker has managed to get an HTML5-based game working on the Apple TV 2G and having first jailbroken the device and installed the Couch Surfer application, which is provides a Web browser for jailbroken Apple TVs. The game is a simple BlackJack card game and he addition is notable as it demonstrates that the Apple TV is a functional platform for HTML5-based applications. HTML5 would provide an alternative to simple Flash-based games and it could become a compelling alternative to Apple’s native App Store applications in time…………

Telecommunications service provider Telephone and Data Systems Inc. said Monday that its second-quarter net income grew sharply and U.S. Cellular Corp. earned $91.1 million, or 87 cents per share in the latest quarter. That’s up from $40.3 million or 38 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier and company recorded a pretax gain of $13.4 million in the latest quarter, because U.S. Cellular bought the remaining interest in a wireless business it did not already own………….
