Brain-wave scanners could one day make it possible for us to communicate with some brain-dead patients. Recent studies have shown that some vegetative patients might be more aware than they seem. Now, Damian Cruse, with the Medical Research Council’s Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, UK, thinks EEG machines will be able to help these patients communicate.
The second of two rockets charged with photographing and creating the sharpest-ever 3D map of the Earth has just lifted off from Kazakhstan. The spacecraft will fly in tight formation that will bring them well within 700 feet of each other as they map the earth’s topography over the next three years.
