According to reports, Google is currently working on an Android game console of its own. At the same time, the inside sources reveal, the search giant is also working on an Android smart watch, which essentially hints that Google is ready to take Android beyond smartphones and tablets.

Android

The company’s intent to launch an Android game console isn’t very surprising. We have recently seen how wildly successful the first-ever Android game console, Ouya, has been. The success of Ouya essentially affirms that the world of gaming is finally ready to move on to a truly open-source console.

And now that this niche is here, Google can very easy cash in on it by launching an Android video game console. Not surprisingly, the company has been closely watching the growth and success of Ouya, since that will directly reveal the viability of an Android game console.

Given the sheer penetration of Android, which is already of 75% smartphones and 57% tablets, Google is in a very strong position to take the platform forward. Since hundreds of millions of users are already hooked up to Android, it would be very easy for Google to dish out an Android game console and then render it compatible with the whole plethora of Android devices already out there.

Not only that, the company has the excellent Google Play store through which it can easily distribute its content. Sources reveal that the other key motivation for Google to undertake such a venture is to outdo Apple which, Google suspects, may launch a game console or smartwatch of its own quite soon.

Hopefully, the games will improve enough to be worth bothering…

I like sophisticated PC games. Farmville, angry birds and limited low rez attempts at shooters just don’t suffice for buying a console.

When GTA 6 comes to Android, I might consider an Android console.
