NaviSurfer II UBU-3G With GPS

VIC Ltd. has update it’s NaviSurfer II UBU-3G in-car PC with GPS and this new in-car PC runs on an auto-specific Ubuntu 10.10 with a 7-inch touchscreen.Navisurfer II UBU-3G is a car PC that embeds into the dashboard of your vehicle with featuring HSDPA modem, Broadband TV & Radio, touch screen, GPS with Software & Maps…….

Navisurfer II is a double-DIN in-car entertainment system that packs an entire PC into the dashboard and powered by the popular open-source Ubuntu Linux distribution.Based on a Celeron M low-power processor running at 1.3GHz and with 250GB of storage for movies and music, the Navisurfer is an impressive device in its own right – but the addition of a GPS receiver and 3G HSDPA mobile broadband modem make it feel like something from Knight Rider.Using the mobile broadband connection and the GPS receiver, it’s possible to browse the Internet while in your car, download traffic updates for the in-built navigation software and even access services such as Google Maps and Facebook Places without needing a separate device.

As with any top-end in-car entertainment system the Navisurfer II includes support for a reversing camera which is displayed on the in-built 7in 800×480 touch-screen display that also acts as the main input device for the custom Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix installation supplied with the system as standard. With Intel continuing to push its MeeGo Linux distribution for in-vehicle use it remains to be seen how popular the traditionally desktop-oriented Ubuntu Linux operating system is in the market. The Navisurfer II is currently available from Vic Ltd. priced at €300.50 – around £253.

The NaviSurfer II Ubu-3G appears to be the first Linux model offered in Vic’s line of Windows XP-based NaviSurfer II car computers, such as the Single-DIN NaviSurfer II announced in early 2008. Like other NaviSurfer II computers, the larger new Ubu-3G model, which fits in double-DIN stereo bays, is hardly state-of-the-art, featuring a somewhat dated 1.3GHz Intel Celeron M processor.
