Xbox One Lacks Backward Compatibility For Xbox 360 Discs

Microsoft has just unveiled its next-generation game console, Xbox One. The console comes with a number of new features. However, the slight catch in Xbox One is that it wouldn’t ship with backward compatibility for Xbox 360 discs or XBLA titles.

Xbox One

The limitation is quite obvious, given the fact that Xbox One is arriving with an x86 architecture whereas the same can’t be said of Xbox 360. The limitation would essentially stop users from playing original Xbox titles on their game console.

Confirming the curb in Xbox One, Xbox Live’s Vice President, Marc Whitten, stated, “The system is based on a different core architecture, so back-compat doesn’t really work from that perspective.”

However, before the avid gamer in you gets a bit too disappointed, the good news is that you will be able to continue your Gamescore over at Xbox 360, while making the switch from Xbox 360. Moreover, the Xbox 360 titles will continue to be around and Microsoft will continue to expend its resources into developing them further.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson, “We care very much about the investment people have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future.” Ideally, one may want to quit dreaming of Xbox One, and shift attention to Sony’s PlayStation 4 because of this. But nearly all next-generation consoles, including PS4, lack backward compatibility and won’t support titles from older consoles.
