iOS Game – Venture Towns: Build An Empire In Your Hand

Venture Towns is a game that was recently released by developer Kairosoft for iOS devices. Kairosoft, based out of Japan, has made a name for itself through the development of games with 8-bit graphics. Their latest, Venture Towns, allows the player to build a bustling metropolis on their phone.

The world of gaming is increasingly embracing micro-technology. It seems like the whole industry is going handheld. Sony recently released its handheld, the Vita, in Japan, and there are plans to bring the device to an international audience in the coming months. The Wii U is Nintendo’s spin on modern handheld technology, a far cry from the GameBoys that were must-have items 20 years ago. Even our smartphones are jumping into the gaming fray. One game, Venture Towns, will make a fantastic addition to your iPhone’s array of apps.

The game’s objective will be familiar to anyone who has ever delved into the world of the SIMS. You’re essentially a city planner who controls what buildings go where, and your decisions have far-reaching affects. For example, place a gym and a nutrition store next to each other, and suddenly you have a Fitness Center. These hubs will affect the economy and demographic of the area. If you’re not careful about which types of buildings you pair up, your city will plunge into economic despair.

Venture Towns is perhaps not the most scientific game, and I would be interested to see what a real city planner has to say about this release from Kairosoft, but the fun is found when you begin with a blank canvas and can place the different types of buildings together and watch your city either explode with rapid growth and economic prosperity or slide into disrepair and turmoil.
Venture Towns provides a bit of an information overload with a somewhat messy looking info bar at the top of the screen and a “learn by continual failure” style of game play. But again, half the fun of this game is watching your town grow victim to entropy.

Rumors have been doing rounds on the web about a Microsoft Office for iPad app. In fact, The Daily has gone on to even present what it calls the ‘first glimpse’ of the app running on the tablet. According to The Daily’s Matt Hickey, he got to spend some time with a ‘working prototype’ of the app and that the app for the Office suite has the same metro-look that Microsoft seems focused on, of late. Microsoft, on the other hand, has debunked these claims as ‘based on inaccurate rumors and speculation.’
