Samsung has told it is unsure whether the latest version of Android version 2.3 will be coming to the Samsung Galaxy S and Samsung Nexus S will be packing the new operating system when it launches later this month. But Samsung is undecided about Gingerbread on Galaxy S and Google said that hardware needs similar to Froyo……

Samsung developed something of a reputation for itself as reluctant to upgrade older Android devices in favor of preserving the prestige of its newer handsets and the company’s response to questions regarding an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Samsung Galaxy S family of smartphones is unlikely to disperse any paranoia. A company spokesperson told Pocket-lint that an official Gingerbread upgrade is still undecided, blaming – among other things – “system requirements” and “the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products.

“In case a new version of Android operating system is publicly announced and released, Samsung will review the possibility of implementation of such new version to the existing Samsung products with Android operating system (“Update”).

Such a review will be based on various factors including, without limitation, the overall effect of such Update to Samsung products, the system requirements, the structural limitations, and the level of cooperation from the component suppliers and the software licensors” Samsung spokesperson

Android lead developer Dan Morrill has already stated that Gingerbread’s hardware requirements are basically “similar” to those of Froyo before it. Given the fact that the Nexus S and the Galaxy S are so similar in terms of their core hardware, we can’t imagine there are significant technical aspects limiting the update (though obviously hardware-related features like NFC wouldn’t function, since the Galaxy S range lacks the necessary chip).

Thanks

Samsung is kinda pissing me off by refusing to release froyo in America
All these faulty release dates sure don’t help
The quotes in this article make me more upset that I probably won’t get gingerbread either, tho it seems they’re just too lazy to release this stuff…

Don’t worry guys, we’ll have froyo by the end of the year XD

  • ex-samsung fan

Samsung should worry about the overall effect of updates on their products. Because a few people were first introduced to Samsung products by purchasing a galaxy S….now they WILL NOT buy a samsung tv or appliance. One contractor put it this way after buying a captivate….(refusing to update a phone = refusing to back your other more expensive products) and he said he will not be put on the hook for samsung.
Our local Best Buy said that after word spread from customers of the galaxy s line from different carriers, samsung couldn’t sell an off brand candy bar in their store…..tv, appliances, anything.
A good reputation is hard to build, a bad reputation is harder to rebuild.

I agree with ex-samsung fan, but would add the most likely reason they won’t upgrade is to make you buy a shiny new samsung. Alot of official samsung response mention the effect an upgrade would have on present products, well that just means to me that in a fast paced mobile market your shiny new samsung device will be obsolete long before your carrier contract is. So for me that means no more samsung products if they will intentionally keep from upgrading software to make me upgrade hardware.

You will get the same problems with apple, motorola, LG etc.. all phones are capible of being good but its always the company’s that ruin the experience… Damn them!!

  • Sgsssucks

Terrible article. I own a Fascinate and have been promised by Samsung back in September that this phone would be updated to Froyo. This is not an older phone, it was released in September and is currently one of Verizon’s flagship higher end devices. We only want what was advertised to us when we bought these devices!

  • Pcrepairsmanchester

Gingerbread is a new firmware update from android Google… it is an update for touch wiz 4.0 and it also speeds up applications and the 3d engine within the phone it is also to allow developers access to create applications and games to use the new NFC near field communication technology – hotel keys on magnetic swipe locks.. bank cards.. etc etc….

as the Samsung galaxy s does not have the required chip to handle NFC Samsung feel its unnecessary to upgrade this phone with the latest firmware and are currently scratching their heads as to release it or not for their customers in the future lots of false rumours went around the internet regarding march release date for galaxy s update to gingerbread but it is still not decided therefore do not expect anything soon! … if you live in the uk and you are currently running Eclair firmware on your samsung phone install Kies and you can update to Froyo.

  • Pcrepairsmanchester

have you tried installing Kies and running the inbuilt software update? if not give that a try first

  • Pcrepairsmanchester

Have you tried installing samsung Kies and running the inbuilt upgrade software Froyo is out for samsung galaxy s users and other handsets alike.

connect your phone through kies and select software upgrade allow the application to complete the upgrade and froyo will be installed.

  • Nbhnohome

hey dude, there are 2 gingerbread leaks (the 2nd leak was proven to run pretty good) for Samsung Galaxy S. You can grab it at XDA. Dont ever say something stupid without doing research OK

  • Russ2k8

I’ve purchased my Samsung Fascinate last year and it is my last Samsung purchased ever. I will not purchase a Samsung again which includes any electronics from them. BOYCOTT SAMSUNG…

  • Anonymous

Wow I made a big mistake purchasing a captivate. I should have known better getting into samsung products, sigh. Anyways, iPhone or HTC phones FTW!!!!

If they don’t give us gingerbread, they’re gonna lose a whole lot of customers. When will these companies understand the importance of brand loyalty by customers… Why do you think Apple stuff is so popular?

  • Outlaw

Someone seems to be confused. At the same time this article was written, it appears that Samsung has already started the kies update for some Galaxy S devices (build date Apr. 8/11), specifically baseband version I9000XXJVK. Read here http://www.gizmocrunch.com/android/6499-samsung-galaxy-s-android-gingerbread . I don’t see why Samsung will not be rolling out 2.3.3 as they have already begun for the Galaxy S. It seems a lot of sites are confused as to what is really happening, and samsung isn’t very forthcoming on info either….causing confusion for all. In any case, there is reason to hope

  • andygladish

Translation: If we upgrade your Fascinate to a current OS, you might not buy a new device.
The truth is, if Samsung/Verizon would properly support their products I MIGHT buy a new device, as it is, they’ve lost a huge amount of customer loyalty by dallying around and not communicating.

  • ralph

You must be in Europe. I was told by samsung tech that this would not work at all on US phones

  • Anonymous

People should read the publishing date of the article before freaking out. Samsung has already committed to rolling out Gingerbread for the Galaxy S. Europe is getting it first, but Canada and the US will be getting it as well. I would say Canadian Galaxy S owners will be getting Gingerbread sometime late summer/early fall.

hi all, I am a galaxy s owner in the UK who has upgraded to gingerbread (android 2.3) . I can confirm that it is soo much better than froyo (android 2.2) . For starters, the phone feels a lot smoother and zippier. There is virtually no lag, and even touchwiz seems to be working well (who’d have thunk it?).

  • P7389

people should think more before posting , yes your phone will be out of date before your contract most phones are out of date within six months to a year and now contracts are 18 months to 24 months long so all the people who think that sammy have held back the release of 2.3.3 so you would by a newer phone just think for 1 second and when most of you who wanted to swop to htc/lg sony because you didnt have the gingerbread update well neither did they ? i have a galaxy s and a wildfire and a desire hd i will not get into a brand war or even some fanboy glib but come on my galaxy s works fine and at the end of the day most people wont upgrade to 2.3.3 as i post this even though 2.3.3 is only released to csc nee and xee only 4% have upgraded so take a chill pill and think

  • divinemelody7

Hi im still waiting for gingerbread in Ireland.I paid 470 euro for this phone and trust me if i don’t receive updates ill never buy another samsung again.Absolutely disgraceful behaviour from this company!!!.From a raging customer.

  • Kevin Lated

na, samsung galaxy s2 just killed the iphone and htc, and they are super dedicated to this phone released updates here and there, I just switched from my iphone to galaxy s2 its amazing!!
sucks that you got the g1 that they did not care about that much, but apparently it was because there was some conflict with the software and hardware.

  • natalie

as an apple fan boy it kills me to say this but galaxy s2 is legendary!! And they actually offer a lot of support for it…
lastly good luck not buying electronics from samsung, they supply parts for sony, apple etc etc

  • Scelia

I have just upgraded my Galaxy S to Gingerbread (2.3.3-Gingerbread.XXJVO) via Kies.
I am on a Orange contract.
It has made the phone better in all ways.

  • Fred

Got gingerbread via Kies this morning. I am on Orange contract.

  • henk

I finally have the update to.
it may have better battery usage but the looks didn’t improve much.
I don’t have the black notification bar, 3d app drawer and my homescreen didn’t change either.
