If you’ve been waiting for a colorful and portable way to protect your iPad that stops just short of a protective sleeve or a bulky case, the new iSkin Duo and iSkin Vu may be perfect for you. Neither case offers the kind of rugged protection you’ll want for carrying your iPad on a road trip or through an airport, but they’re both designed to allow you to use your iPad on a day to day basis while keeping it safe from scratches and damage……..

Are you a little OCD when it comes to germs? Do you feel like you need to wash your hands after you use your iPad? Did that report about the iPad screens in Apple Stores being hotbeds for assorted fungi and bacteria make you want to take a long, hot shower?

iSkin Duo is a house built in silicon that can protect your device from the halos in general and a possible collision. is a built in protect your device from the in general a possible.

iSkin Duo iPad (US$49.95) in a post a couple of weeks ago; it’s the iPad skin with built-in Microban® antimicrobial protection. iSkin was kind enough to send three of the units to review and then give away to TUAW readers.

The Duo gets its name from the two-tone color scheme applied to each of seven different models, but the fact that it protects your iPad two different ways (from scratches and from bacterial buildup on the skin) could have also factored into the product naming.

iSkin says the Vu has a rear-bottom hatch that can be removed and allows the iPad to dock with the Apple iPad Keyboard or Standard Dock without having to remove the cover, which is nice. The hatch also includes a charging cable opening with an integrated protective cover that keeps out dust and dirt. It’s also worth noting that the Duo completely covers the black border of your iPad, as well as the power button.

It features a removable hatch that allows the iPad to dock in the case with a standard or keyboard dock. The hatch also has a protective cover that seals the dock connector port when it is not in use. The case covers and protects the volume and power buttons, the orientation lock and the earphone jack and the case is raised on the front surface to generate a buffer for the screen when laying face down. The iSkin Vu ships in black, blue, orange, purple, pink, aqua and red.

The iSkin Duo for iPad is a hypoallergenic silicone case with a black, embossed front bevel cover that offers raised protection for the screen and contrasts the colored rear. The Duo covers the volume and power buttons and leaves the orientation lock directly accessible. It provides additional silicone in the grip zone, the area where the iPad is handled most often, and slims the case near the dock connector to allow in-case docking with the keyboard and standard docks. The iSkin Duo is available in brown, clear, yellow, purple, pink, red and blue.

The iSkin Duo is a thin, molded silicone case that has protective covers for the earphone port, volume, home, and sleep buttons. The silicone is smooth and non-porous to resist dust and lint, and has been treated with antimicrobial protection, if you’re the type who worries about germs on your iPad. The iSkin Duo also comes in seven different colors, including a see-through “arctic” version that’s almost clear.

To make sure that your fear of germs is negated, Microban is embedded into the silicone. This antimicrobial agent works constantly to kill fungi and bacteria that can cause staining and odors. Need to sterilize the case? You can wash it in hot water without distorting the shape and fit of the Duo.

Made of silicone, the Duo skins provide a non-slip surface. The bezel cover (which is black on all of the models) and the back of the lower back panels (about where you’d grip the iPad in your hands in portrait mode) are given a slight texture to make them even more easy to grip. The silicone is thick enough to protect the iPad from day to day bumps and scratches, and even covers the volume, power, and home buttons to keep moisture or dirt from getting in.

iSkin did one other brilliant thing — they included a Microfiber screen cleaning cloth with each of the Duos, perfect for getting all of those finger smudges off the screen quickly. If the screen looks as bad as mine does right now, don’t worry; iSkin thought about that and they threw in a pre-moistened screen cleaning towel as well.

I liked the feel of the Duo, and I feel it would do a good job protecting my iPad. I’m not sure I’m really concerned about microbes growing all over an iPad skin, but for parents of young children who are playing with your iPad, this might be a must-have feature. iSkin’s packaging of the Duo is great, I love the added goodies, and all in all the Duo has a very high quality feel to it.
