NNSA Blames Social Media For Workforce Shortage

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has published a report that in the short time The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) may face workforce shortage of qualified candidates and challenges to recruit and retain new workers. NNSA blames the lack of social media access within the agency premises as the primary contributor the anticipated workforce shortage. The young workers early in the career simply do not want to be disconnected from their familiar social tools.

The report titled “Modernizing the Nuclear Security Enterprise: Strategies and Challenges in Sustaining Critical Skills in Federal and Contractor Workforces” says that NNSA workers need to work in secure areas which impede the use of personal cell phones, e-mail, and social media. This retracts the agency from attracting younger skilled candidates. Young people are simply not ready to be detached from the social wave for a job.

NNSA has 34,000 management and operating (M&O) contractor workers. 2,400 federal workers are directly employed by NNSA in its Washington headquarters, at eight enterprise offices, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and complex.

Does the NNSA necessarily need “Top talent” to accomplish its mission? Its not like they’re done anything novel in the past 20 years. You don’t need an oppenheimer to design a new weapon in the age of CAD and the base of knowledge we already have.
There is plenty of willing scientists in training not from MIT and University of Chicago that would like the jobs they offer.
