Social Media Means Facebook To Many Consumers

Facebook is, without a doubt, the largest social network in the world of online social media. With the largest user base, it has come to exert an immense influence on the world of web and the way we use internet. This also means that the online social interactions of a lot of people are limited merely to Facebook.

Steve Olenski of Forbes decided to undertake a rather unscientific study. It was a study which wasn’t based on any definite data, rather the subjective response of the people.

Steve did this by putting a simple question to people: “What’s the 1st thing you think of when you hear the term ‘social media’?” Steve first did this exercise back in 2010 and has done it again, in 2012. According to him, he received wide-ranging responses on both occasions.

However, what is noticeable about the responses in 2012 is that when he put the question, an overwhelming 32% responded by saying that ‘Facebook’ was the first thin that came to their mind on the mention of the term ‘social media.’ This is extraordinary since it means that Facebook has been able to achieve a level where a brand becomes synonymous with the product itself for many users.

Steve then went on to collaborate with the guys at AYTM, a leading market research company, to create an infographic based on the responses he received to his social media query. The infographic depicts some very interesting thoughts people have towards the social media and is posted below.
