Instagram has been the major player in the photo-editing arena for quite some time now. And ever since Facebook acquired it, the social network has also geared up to enter the mobile photo-editing space by dishing out its own Facebook Camera app. It may seem that Google is also eyeing this niche now, with its acquisition of a prominent company which excels in photo editing software.

Nik Software

Nik software is the maker of Snapseed, an iOS photo editing app that has been deemed as one of the best apps currently available. The company is known for creating not only commercially successful photo editing software but also top quality apps which are regularly used by professional photographers.

Google has now announced that it acquired the company for an undisclosed sum. This may be a first step by Google towards launching its own photo editing app, or a high-quality photo editing feature for its 400 million+ Google Plus users.

The big question that has been panicking Snapseed users is that whether or not Google is going to kill the app. While we don’t know that for sure, the logical step for the search giant would be to let Snapseed continue in the mobile photo editing space and use its leverage to entice users towards Google+. Perhaps it can tie the two together so that it becomes very easy to share Snapseed-edited photos over Google+.

Google already has a fairly sized user base on Google Plus. But the problem is that not many users tend to spend a lot of time on the social network and it virtually lacks a lot of ‘activity.’ By adding features such as top-of-the-range photo editing and other similar functions, Google may indeed be successful in making its Google+ user base start ‘living’ rather than merely existing.
