Is your business listed on Google Places? Have you noticed a decline in customers recently? This may be due to the fact that your company is listed as “permanently closed” in Google Places when it’s actually open. Users can easily click on the “report a problem” tab and report the business as permanently closed. If this is done multiple times, the listing will officially be changed. This feature has recently been abused by competitors “closing” down businesses online. This has been a large problem for certain businesses who had no idea this was what was driving down sales.
Because of this, Google has added a new feature that emails the business owner when their listing has been changed to permanently closed to hopefully alert those business owners whose businesses are still open. This has been a reoccurring problem for the folks at Google over the last few months and they have reportedly started working on fixing the problem. To prove a point, one blogger even listed Google’s corporate office as permanently closed to show what an inconvenience it can be for business owners. Hopefully this problem will be fixed in the near future, but in the meantime make sure to keep an eye out for people trying to list your business as closed!
