Rovio Acquires Futuremark Games Studio

Rovio Entertainment has seen huge success and popularity with the game that has become its very identity, the Angry Birds franchise. Building on that success, the company has acquired a number of smaller companies to improve its game-development capabilities. The latest on the list is Futuremark Games Studio. This company is a part of Futuremark, a company that develops PC performance test software.

The exact terms of the acquisition are unknown, so we can’t say how much did this deal rake in. However, it has been hinted that the real purpose of the acquisition was to bring over the staff of Futuremark Games Studio to Rovio. This is not to say that Futuremark Games Studio hasn’t developed games on its known. Since its inception in 2008, the studio has developed games such as Unstoppable Gorg and Hungribles.

Rovio has been expanding ever since the wild success of its Angry Birds franchise. The company acquired the animation studio, Kombo, which is based in Finland, less than a year ago. The acquisition of Kombo was aimed at enhancing the animation-related capabilities of the developer.

The official statement from the company over this latest acquisition said, ‘As Rovio continues its expansion in entertainment, publishing, animation, and retail, the company will continue to focus on seeking out the world’s best talent to join its team.’

Futuremark is also on the verge of the release of its grade benchmark tool, 3DMark. According to the company, this release will bring unified gaming performance comparison across multiple operating systems and form factors.
