Japan is not only a country of Earthquakes but also it is country of developing different technologies. A research group at The University of Electro-Communications is developing an interface to detect tongue movement using the Kinect Interface. This interface is intended mainly for training the oral muscles including the tongue only. It is especially made for those people who have oral motor function disorders affecting their ability to speak or swallow.
Students at the University of Electro-Communications in Japan has developed a device. They call it ‘SITA.’ At first, a Kinect detects the user’s face and eyes. Then it estimates the position of the nose and the mouth area. Later it detects the protruding tongue. Students mentioned that, those people with oral motor function disorders who have trouble speaking or swallowing can speak or swallow with ease. They can get a tongue workout through SITA.
SITA is more hygienic than devices that clamp on to test tongue wriggling. It is more functional than other bodily function aiming video games till now released. Right now, the team is working on a more advanced prototype with more precise detection including adding the ability to detect movement of the lips. You can click here to know more.
