Chemists may have discovered a way to charge small electronics, such as iPods and cell phones, with your heartbeat. Nanotech generator discoveries by Dr. Zing Lin Wang from the Georgia Institute of Technology are planning to present their new invention. The team behind the invention hopes that as the nanotechnology used in the chip evolves, it could lead to electronics which don’t require batteries or mains power.
In theory, any body movement, even the pinch of a finger, could be used to generate power. So far the team used the technology to transmit a radio signal and to power LCD displays and diodes, but they are convinced it can go much further.
Lead researcher Zhong Lin Wang from Georgia, said: ‘This development represents a milestone toward producing portable electronics that can be powered by body movements without the use of batteries or electrical outlets.’
‘Our nano-generators are poised to change lives in the future. Their potential is only limited by one’s imagination,’ Wang added.
The technology works by using zinc oxide nanowires, which generate electricity when strained or flexed. This means that almost any body movement, be it a heartbeat or walking, can generate power.
Each chip is made up of millions of nanowires, which are so small that 500 could fit in a human hair.
The combined power of five nanogenerators produced about one micro ampere output current at three volts, which is around the same voltage generated by two regular AA batteries.
Dr Wang said: “While a few volts may not seem like much, it has grown by leaps and bounds over previous versions of the nanogenerator.
“Additional nanowires and more nanogenerators, stacked together, could produce enough energy for powering larger electronics, such as an iPod or charging a cell phone.”
The findings were presented at the National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society.

Just curious, even if this does become mainstream, how is it going to hold the power if there is no battery? you cant keep moving it all day to keep it on. common sense.
Does your heart stop beating randomly? If its powered off your heart beat or even a small movement you would be perfectly ok as no one is regularly perfectly still…
