MuscleNerd Explains The Evolution Of iPhone Baseband And Unlocks In A Presentation [Video]

MuslceNerd is such a popular name in the iOS community that it needs no introduction. Popular with this nickname all around the web, he is one of the top iOS hackers. He is also a part of the teams which are usually responsible for releasing the earliest tools for jailbreaking the latest firmware releases from Apple.


MuscleNerd is basically a part of the iPhone Dev Team which is one of the most active iOS hacking teams right now. At the ‘Hack in the Box’ conference this year, he came forth to explain how the basebands of iPhone have evolved over time and how the unlocking tools of the smartphone have evolved in correspondence.

He explains that ever since Apple released its first iPhone back in 2007, the hardware as well as the software of the baseband that Apple uses for cellular communications over iPhone has changed and evolved.

According to him, many of these comprised of major changes which Apple made primarily to discourage and thwart the efforts of those who tried to accomplish carrier unlock on iPhone’s baseband. Naturally, iOS hackers were not discouraged, rather grew more ambitious in accepting the challenge from Apple and were able to accomplish an unlock on nearly each of iPhone’s basebands.

MuscleNerd also shares some very interesting and rather surprising statistics. For instance, he states that ever since the Dev Team’s website was launched back in 2007, it has received 100 million hits! He also compares the Apple basebands to those in the Qualcomm handsets and explains how the changes that Apple has made to the traditional Qualcomm baseband boot sequence will effect iPhone itself.
