YouTube Introduces Face Blurring Feature For Sensitive Videos

YouTube is an excellent medium to get your video out to the world. However, when a video is about human rights abuse or other such sensitive issues, it can land the people in the video into trouble. For long, professional reporters have used face blurring techniques to blur the faces of people they interview in their videos. Now, YouTube has introduced this option too.

YouTube Face Blur

This is essentially a huge step for the video sharing giant YouTube. That is because, by taking this step YouTube is aiming to become a first-hand source of ‘reporting’.

Contributors will find the new option of face blurring under the Video Enhancements menu. The option can be activated simply by a single click. Once the option is activated, the technology blurs the faces in the video. However, in case the technology is unable to detect a face in the video, there is no manual way to blur the faces.

According to YouTube, “Because human rights footage, in particular, opens up new risks to the people posting videos and to those filmed, it’s important to keep in mind other ways to protect yourself and the people in your videos. YouTube is proud to be a destination where people worldwide come to share their stories, including activists. Along with efforts like the Human Rights Channel and Citizentube that curate these voices, we hope that the new technologies we’re rolling out will facilitate the sharing of even more stories on our platform.”
