Apple Introduces Calendar App In OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion GM

Apple has been trying hard to reconcile its mobile OS, iOS with its desktop-based Mac OS. It has slowly integrated a number of popular features from iOS into OS X. For instance, in OS X Mountain Lion, the iCal feature has been replaced with Calendar and Reminders apps, which are two separate apps, quite like they are in iOS.

However, the Calendar and Reminders apps that Apple has introduced on OS X Mountain Lion seem to have a far better interface. Moreover, Apple has also expanded the scope of Reminders so that they are no longer merely calendar events with alarms but can also be used for location-based notifications.

The interface of this new Calendar app is quite user-friendly. For instance, earlier, when you clicked the Calendar button, it created a popup menu. Now, when you click this button, a sidebar Calendar listing appears on the screen. With this new sidebar, the calendar is organized in a far better manner. It shows the calendar settings and changes you have made across all your accounts and calendar subscriptions.

Smart Search:
Also, navigating and searching through the calendar has become all the more easier with the new ‘Smart search’ feature. You just have to enter the beginning of a query and it offers you several possible results. You can make use of multiple criterion to narrow down your search.

Picker popups:
A very useful new feature that has also been added to the app is that now, you can go straight to a data on Calendar and add different settings to it. You don’t necessarily have to adjust the month and day numbers, as was the case before. This ability to go straight to a Calendar date has been enabled via picker popups.

Integration with Notification Center:
With so many apps and online portals, the sheer number of notifications one receives gets hard to handle. However, it can be easy if all these notifications are bundled inside a well-organized central repository. For this purpose, you have the option of making your Calender reminders appear in the Notification Center.

Ability to popular birthdays from Facebook:
One really cool feature of this new Calendar app is that you can turn on the ‘Birthdays’ calendar and then sync Facebook with Contacts. Once you do this, all the birthdays of your friends on Facebook will be automatically populated to the calendar.
