Nokia Trying To Fill iOS Map Space With Free Maps App – Here

Ever since Apple decided to replace Google Maps with its own, iOS users have been seeking other mapping solutions for their devices. Apple did provide them with a list of viable alternatives but none fares as good as what Google offers. Apparently, Nokia is now trying to fill in this space with its new ‘Here’ maps app.

Nokia Here Maps

It is rather interesting to note that Nokia is currently releasing the ‘Here’ maps for the iOS platform only, but promises a toolkit for developers interested to make it compatible with Android. It makes sense when seen in the context of what Nokia has to say about this new maps app. According to the mobile phone maker, the Here maps is an attempt to procure such a mapping solution which is compatible across multiple platforms.

In a press release, Nokia says that Here maps are “the first location cloud to deliver the world’s best maps and location experiences across multiple screens and operating systems.”

Although Nokia is a recent player in the arena of mapping solutions, the efforts seems to be promising. The ‘Here’ Maps app packs a whole host of impressive features, including voice-guided walk navigation, public transport directions as well as certain functionality for offline use.

According to Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, “People want great maps, and with HERE we can bring together Nokia’s location offering to deliver people a better way to explore, discover and share their world. Additionally, with HERE we can extend our 20 years of location expertise to new devices and operating systems that reach beyond Nokia. As a result, we believe that more people benefit from and contribute to our leading mapping and location service.”
