Our Phones Will Soon Understand Our Moods

Our mobile phones are probably the one thing that stays with us at all times. They would be excellent judges of our characters if only they could be conscious. While that’s not possible, they can at least discern our moods now, thanks to a new software by University of Rochester researchers.

Moods analysis

The software essentially analyses your sound when you talk into the phone – and based on that, it can tell what kind of a mood you are in. For instance, if you yell into the phone, the software would reveal that you are angry. Sobs may lead it to determine that you are gloomy, laughter would mean joy and so on.

Of course the words that you speak into the phone do not matter since the software determines the mood solely on the basis of the tone of your sound. The researchers who have worked on the software claim that it is able to predict the mood with 81 percent accuracy.

For now, a prototype app based on this software has been created but the researchers hope that its capabilities can be translated into a lot of other things. For instance, apps can be developed to use the mood-determining of this software to dish out appropriate content to a user. In fact, such a software can be availed to create a built-in counsellor for a user which can display quotes, videos and other updates based on a user’s mood.

The software is still in its infancy, yet we can stay assured that in the coming days, such a voice-analysing piece of software may prove very useful to mobile vendors.
