Google Hints Of ‘X Phone,’ Slated For May 2013 Release

In the past, it has been frequently speculated that Google may be working on a smartphone of its own, namely ‘X Phone.’ So far, the search giant has been rather shy of playing to this speculation, but in its latest earnings call, Google executives explored the possibility of a smartphone as well as its many features. This may show that the company is indeed working on one.

Google X Phone

The most notable thing in Google’s latest earnings call was that executives repeatedly emphasized Motorola’s importance. Although Motorola has been incurring losses ever since the acquisition, Google is adamant that the acquisition has vital long-term importance.

Larry Page then went forth to discuss the infinite possibilities of features that can be added to a smartphone today, “In today’s multi screen world, the opportunities are endless… battery life is a huge issue… when you drop your phone it shouldn’t go splat. There’s a real potential to invent new and better experiences.”

This hints that Google may be working on a smartphone that features a body that wouldn’t incur any damage when it falls and also features an improved battery. Page further pointed out that recharging a smartphone repeatedly is somewhat of a hassle for the users. And although he didn’t exactly mention it, this hints that the possibly upcoming Google smartphone may feature wireless charging.

Other Google executives cited the features that make the search giant highly relevant in today’s mobile arena. They cited Google Maps as well as Google search that can sway the odds in the company’s favor. Given the whole content of the earnings call, it would seem that Google plans to leverage Motorola’s resources to create a smartphone that will be entirely Google-branded and will come equipped with the aforementioned features.

The company also cited that its subsidiary, Motorola, may be ready to dish out something big by the spring of 2013. Does that hint at a launch deadline for the touted ‘X Phone’? We can’t say for sure but there is a real chance of such a happening.
