Nokia Receives $1.35 Billion Grant To Develop Graphene

Graphene is touted as the world’s strongest material. This one-atom thick material is 300 times stronger than steel. And, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has now received a hefty grant of $1.35 billion from European Union to develop graphene and explore its potentials.

The grant has been handed over to Nokia because the company is part of the Graphene Flagship Consortium. The consortium includes a number of other industry leaders, all of which have shown interest in using graphene.

Graphene is not only the strongest material, Nokia reminds us that it is also the lightest and best intrinsic conductor. These properties make it an ideal material for computing solutions and Nokia has been exploring such uses of the material for quite some time.

According to Nokia, it has ‘deep roots in the field — we first started working with graphene already in 2006. Since then, we have come to identify multiple areas where this material can be applied in modern computing environments.’

The huge grant, that comes from European Union’s future and emerging technologies program (FET) will be spread over a period of 10 years. The prospects for graphene certainly seem promising and if Nokia gets it right, we may have a revolutionary new solution to bolster modern computing capabilities.

Nokia also seems cognizant of the fact that the grant can finally allow it to seriously start work on developing graphene. A statement from the company reads, ‘We’ve done some very promising work so far, but I believe the greatest innovations have yet to be discovered.’
