Intel Reveals Details Of Next-Gen Graphics Chip ‘Iris’

With every subsequent generation of computers, chip-makers strive to create more powerful graphics chips and processors. Lately, Intel has revealed the details of its next-generation graphics chips. These chips will be branded under the banner of ‘Iris.’

Intel Iris

In the past, we have heard Intel talk about its upcoming Haswell processors. The company has affirmed that Iris graphics will be used together with these Haswell chips in the next generation of laptops and desktops.

According to Intel, “Iris graphics brings [an] eye-popping visual experience — no extra graphics card required.” In other words, not only is Intel planning to ramp up the graphical performance of the chip, it is also trimming down its size at the same time.

Intel claims that these Iris graphics chips will be able to deliver twice the 3D performance when compared to the Ivy Bridge chips. When running in laptops or desktops, Iris will be able to deliver 3 times better computing performance. One of the key reasons why this next-gen line-up of chips will be so improved is that it will come with embedded DRAM.

Thanks to this embedded DRAM and other improvements, Iris enables better photo and video editing, and displays very high video resolutions with perfect clarity. Intel promises that the chips can easily handle 4K UltraHD display resolution. Given all these features, we are certainly eager to lay our hands on a system which includes Iris. But we’ll have to wait till June this year, which is when Intel plans to launch the Haswell line-up.
