Nvidia Joins Microsoft For Second Generation Of Surface Tablets

Microsoft unveiled its Surface tablets a while ago amidst a lot of anticipation. However, over time, the Surface slates have failed to gain much traction in the tablet market. Now, the company is apparently gearing up for the second-generation of Surface tablets, this time in collaboration with Nvidia.

Given Nvidia’s position in chip-making, especially when delivering chips with top graphical performances, Microsoft’s decision may turn out to be good for Surface line-up in the long run. However, it remains to be seen what new features, hardware and software, will be built into the second-generation of Surface devices.

The partnership was recently confirmed by Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang who stated that Nvidia is working really hard on creating such Surface slates which will be more successful in the tablet arena. Only time will tell how successful these endeavors turn out to be.

In the past too, Nvidia has contributed to the Surface industry. The company furnished the chips to go into the Surface RT slate. But the tablet was an abysmal failure. Not only did it pack an ARM chip, it fell short on having Outlook, thus making it look like an expensive machine with not much value.

This time around, Nvidia plans to build Outlook into the Surface slates. According to Huang, “It is the killer app for Windows. Now we’re going to bring it with the second-generation Surface. We’re working really hard on it, and we hope that it’s going to be a big success.”

We’re not sure if a single app can turn the sinking Surface ship around, but we sure do look forward to a better, more affordable and competitive Surface line-up in the coming days.
