By 2017, 68% Of All Addressable Americans Will Own An iPhone

iPhone is the most popular smartphone right now, not only in the U.S. but also globally. However, its success in the U.S. market is its key strength. Projected estimates now reveal that by 2017, 68% of all Americans will own an iPhone.

When it comes to the global smartphone market, iPhone’s market share has slipped in recent years. The key reason for this is the availability of a multitude of Android handsets from many other vendors. While in terms of numbers, iPhone has certainly taken a backseat, Apple continues to make more profit by selling iPhone units than any other smartphone vendor.

And although iPhone’s overall market share is expected to fall even further in the coming years, the handset’s popularity in the U.S. continues to rise. Horace Dediu, an analyst with Asymco, has now revealed projected estimates of Apple’s success in the U.S. market during the next four years.

According to Dediu, Apple will continue to muster immense success in the country and iPhone will remain the most popular handset among the Americans. In fact, by 2017, nearly 68% Americans aged 13 or older will own an iPhone. This is certainly a bold claim but given the fact that iPhone sales have continued to grow domestically, this is not all that impossible.

However, the projections ignore the fact that many new players have entered the arena and are chipping away at the market share. We have seen Nexus handsets grow in sales and popularity and Motorola has recently dished out its very own smartphones. It remains to be seen if Apple’s iPhone sales will be perturbed by these factors or that iPhone will continue to be the champ of the arena.
