Windows 8 may not have gained traction in adoption rate, but the operating system has significantly improved on the security side. A new independent report has revealed the information.
The German security suite evaluator AV-test.org has published its latest round of bimonthly reports. It has rated a total of 26 security suites for Windows as “certified” including Windows 8 itself, in the latest round. Windows 8’s built-in Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) has performed pretty well in the tests.
AV-Test CEO Andreas Marx said in an email to CNET, “Windows 8 comes with Windows Defender. [It’s] under a different name and quite nicely integrated in Windows 8, but the ‘Protection’ results are not much better when you compare Windows Defender (on Win 8) with MSE (on Win XP, Vista or 7).”
According to Marx, Windows 8 with Defender can catch 80% of all zero-day attacks. The built-in security is turned on automatically in Windows 8; that means, there is no such thing as an “unprotected” system in Windows 8.
In the tests by AV-Test Windows 8 with Defender scored 11.5 out of 18. The highest scorer was BitDefender Internet Security 2013 with 17 out of 18. It is followed by Bullguard Internet Security 13.0 and Kaspersky Internet Security 2013, with 16.5 and 16.0 respectively. Among free security suites, AVG AntiVirus Free 2013 and Avast Free Antivirus 7 scored highest.
