During the World War II that lasted from 1939 to 1945, dozens of aircraft crashed and fell into into the Pacific Ocean. Now autonomous underwater robots have been deployed to find them.
Last year, some local spear fishermen diving on Palau’s western barrier reef stumble with an intact plane under water. They alerted the owner of a dive shop, who passed photos of the wreck to Pat Scannon, owner of BentProp. Scannon’s team eventually identified the plane as an American Corsair. But to be sure enough, engineers sent an autonomous underwater vehicle. Later they ascertained that it was American Corsair.
However, after detecting one aircraft under water that was used in World War II, engineers hope that they would get more planes like this. So they have deployed an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) called Remus. The drone has GoPro HERO3 HD cameras.
