Cisco Plans To Make Automobiles Networked And Connected

The automobile industry is increasingly enticed by the latest technologies and is trying to incorporate them into its vehicles. Some have already had some headway while other automobile vendors are also trying to jump the bandwagon. And Cisco intends to cash on this trend by introducing the concept of a totally ‘networked’ car, sometime in future.

Cisco Connected Car

Whereas Microsoft has, in the past, presented its Windows OS as a viable option to run on the systems of cars, Cisco has a very different approach to the whole problem. Rather than concerned with what software a car may run, Cisco is focusing on the underlying networking platform that the car may use.

In other words, Cisco envisions a car which can shed a lot of weight by getting rid of networking cables; a car that can easily switch between 4G and cellular networks and is able to receive over-the-air updates to its software with ease and convenience.

All the work to this end is being done at Cisco under the garb of ‘Cisco Connected Car’ project. Initially, Cisco is working on enabling a car to automatically connect to a wireless network. In the long-term, the company plans to bring in its networking switch which could be used with an automobile.

According to the managing director of Cisco’s smart connected vehicles unit, Heldes Antunes, “We literally have reached out to every car company in the world. What we would really like to do is to help standardize on the underlying networking platform and then allow them to innovate on the top.”
