First Mass-Market Electric Sedans From Tesla Debuts

For almost one year, electric car maker Tesla has provided tantalizing pictures and given promises about their electric cars. Last Friday, the company’s first mass market sedans, called Model S, finally hit the road. Tesla marked the occasion with a ceremony held in its Fremont factory with thousands of people including employees, local politicians, and California Gov. Jerry Brown.

The Model S is priced at $49,900 after a federal tax credit. On one charge, it can go 160 miles. Tesla confirmed that 10,000 plus buyers have put down a refundable deposit for the five-seat sedan car. The company expects that in this year 5,000 Sedan cars will be sold. Tesla Vice President George Blankenship argued that the Model S sedans are “the most beautiful sedan in the marketplace.”

The debut of the Model S is a critical moment for the fledgling car company, in the face of the high spirits during Friday’s ceremony.
