Pandora Reaches A Milestone Of 200 Million Registered Listeners

Pandora, launched in 2005, is one of the biggest music streaming services around. The music giant announced, it has achieved a milestone by racking up 200 million registered users listening to nearly 1.5 billion hours of music per month.

Pandora founder Tim Westergren wrote in a blog post, “When we launched pandora.com in 2005, we hoped to create a new way to discover and enjoy music that was completely personalized for each and every listener, we envisioned a time when artists of all kinds would thrive on radio, connecting with fans who loved exactly their kind of music.”

Pandora took 6 years to get 100 million users, but less than two years to double that number to 200 million. A infographic(posted below) reveals people listened to more than 100,000 unique artists, played 1 million unique songs, and streamed nearly 1.5 billion hours of music in march.

In order to gain a competitive advantage, Pandora also introduced different promotion like, a cap on mobile listening announced in February. For the irregular users Pandora offers a service limited to 40 hours of free music each month. After that, users are invited to pay a one-time fee of $0.99 for the remainder of the month or subscribe to the premium service.

Despite its recent success, Pandora has challenges to face in the near future. Through an announcement last month, Pandora CEO Joseph Kennedy declared of leaving the company after nearly 10 years of co-operation. Pandora’s earnings report showed big revenue gain in Q4, 2013 from advertising, coupled with $14.6 million in losses.
