Proponents of autonomous cars have some good news waiting. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is preparing regulations for self-driving cars. The announcement came from NHTSA administrator David Strickland at a forum on Tuesday.
NHTSA will, however, start writing the rules after two to three years. In the mean time, the regulator will be working on a research project examining various aspects of autonomous car technologies. The regulatory body has already talked with Google, which has completed 300,000 miles of test drive of its autonomous cars, and other companies about the technology.
Strickland hoped that self-driving cars would be an “evolutionary step” that could save “thousands of lives” in future. The technology would allow physically disabled people and senior citizens ‘drive’ through the streets again.
In some states rules and regulations for autonomous cars are already in place. But there is a “huge amount of work” to be done before such vehicles hit the roads nationwide.
