Israeli Researchers Develop Sensor That Can Make Artificial Skin Close To Real

You might have read that researchers have developed a better artificial skin named “e-skin” over the years. And lately, a team of researchers from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology has said that they’ve discovered how to make a new kind of flexible sensor that one day could be integrated into e-skin.

Artificial Skin

The researchers  from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have built a new type of flexible sensor that would allow the artificial skin to detect touch, humidity and temperature. Those sensors consist of gold-based nano-particles that are just five to eight nano-meters in diameter. However, researchers found that when those nanoparticles were laid on top of a substrate that was made of PET (poly-ethylene terephthalate), the resulting compound conducted electricity differently depending on how the substrate was bent. It means that researchers can adjust its sensitivity just by increasing its thickness.

The researchers work has been published [abstract] in the ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces journal. According to researchers, these sensors can be customized, and hence they could perform a variety of other tasks in future including monitoring strain on bridges and detecting cracks in engines.
