Canonical, the company that has been developing the Ubuntu flavor of Linux and releasing its subsequent versions, has claimed in the past that it intends to launch a mobile OS for smartphones and tablets. The company may be on the verge of doing so, hinting a touch-enabled surprise on January 2.
The home page of Ubuntu website contains the following text currently, “So close, you can almost touch it.” This text is accompanied with a clock which is ticking backwards and will reach 00:00 at 8 a.m. ET on Wednesday, January 2.
The wording quite clearly shows that the company is possibly going to release a touch-based OS or announce such an OS for now.
Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth recently stated that his company intends to bring its OS to the mobile devices. To ensure that, he said the company would announce a mobile OS very soon. Naturally, if Canonical does that, the new OS would be touch-based to support the touchscreen input on mobile devices.
However, it does seem more likely for now that Canonical will reveal a few features of this upcoming Ubuntu mobile OS and hand out a rather distant date, possibly April 2014, to actually launch the new OS.
