Mozilla Unveils A Speedy Schedule For Firefox OS Releases

Firefox OS has been one of the more recent entrants in the arena of mobile operating systems. However, Mozilla is really putting its back into the new mobile OS and has expressed plans of sticking to an aggressive release schedule which will result in feature releases on a quarterly basis.

Firefox OS

Mozilla team works on it’s Firefox browser in a similar fashion, following a rapid-release model. The team has brought the same philosophy to the development of Firefox OS, although it may be a bit hard when it comes to an operating system.

The company has decided that it will dish out a new feature release for Firefox OS every quarter, while a security update for previous versions will be released every six weeks or so. From the looks of it, this is the most aggressive release schedule that we have seen in any mobile OS. So if Mozilla is eventually able to pull it off, that would be an achievement in itself.

According to the company’s Manager of Release Management, Alex Keybl, “As far as I know, that’s the most aggressive mobile OS release strategy out there. This sort of alignment across multiple browser products, and now an OS, is unprecedented at the pace we’re moving.”

The current practice of mobile vendors is to bother with an OS update nearly once a year. Although the Mozilla team seems determined to cut this time down to one-fourth by handing out a release every quarter, that may prove quite tough in the coming days. And so, we’ll just have to wait and see how effectively the Mozilla team is able to deliver on this promise.
