Samsung Wallet Unveiled, Strikingly Similar To Apple’s Passbook

Samsung has lifted the wraps from its new mobile app, Samsung Wallet. The new app essentially serves the same functionality as is offered by Apple in Passbook. Putting aside the similarities in their features, the new app also seems to have borrowed a lot of its look and feel from Passbook.

Like Passbook, the Samsung Wallet app lets users store boarding passes, coupons, membership cards and other details, all in a single app. Whenever the users need to present any of these, they simply access it from the app and present to a company which supports the mode and which can then scan a barcode off the digital pass.

The general outlook of the app seems uncannily alike as Passbook. The very logo of the app, showing a few passes peeking out of a wallet pocket, seems similar to the Passbook’s logo. The functionality of the two apps is also, more or less, the same.

Moreover, Samsung Wallet barely offers anything new as compared to Passbook. Samsung has posted a detailed document which essentially speaks about the functionality of the app at length and reveals how the developers can use the app’s API.

This detailed document can be read here. You can also get the developer preview of the app at the aforementioned link. Samsung hasn’t revealed when we may expect a public release of the app, although if we were to hazard a guess, it may be sometime during the third quarter this year.
