August Smart Lock Combines Convenience, Security And Technology

A number of internet locks have surfaced in the past but they have failed to gain much traction because most of them turn out to be simply impractical. However, August intends to change this with its new lock module which has been designed by Yves Behar.

August Smart lock

The lock by August is not only elegant and very easy to use, it also comes with a number of really cool options. Anyone who has an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 can send or receive access keys for this lock and you can even share time-dependent keys with your friends. They keys will be valid for a specific period.

The best part about this lock is the convenience it offers. To install it, all you need to do is replace the standard deadbolt lock with the August lock module. This way, you don’t need to take off the exterior key plate intact. Once the lock module is in place, you can manually use it or lock it wirelessly once your iPhone is within its range.

Key sharing:
Key sharing is the coolest feature of this lock. You can share keys for the lock with your friends or anyone you know. For instance, if you are throwing a party and don’t want to lock and unlock the door yourself, you can simply create a temporary key and share it with your friends. These friends will then be able to unlock the door once they are within the range of the lock.

Moreover, this key will expire after a given amount of time, as specified by you. Moreover, the accompanying app for the lock is able to keep an entry log, which lets you keep a close eye on everyone who unlocks the door.

The module itself comes equipped with four AA batteries. According to the cofounder of August, Jason Johnson, these batteries should juice up the lock between six months and a year, depending on the frequency of its usage. Since you don’t necessarily have to connect with a Wi-Fi to use the lock, you can rest assured that with a working and compatible iPhone and an alive battery, you can access and tweak your lock whether or not the main power is available.
