Garmin Turns Your Smartphone Into A In-Car Head-Up Display That Shows Directions

Last month we reported about some engineers trying to make a motorcycle helmet that can navigate. In the mean time, GPS maker Garmin has made a portable Head-Up Display (HUD) for cars that projects turn-by-turn directions on to a vehicle’s windscreen.

Garmin portable head-up display (HUD)

The Garmin portable display receives navigation information from your smartphone and projects it onto a transparent film on your windshield or an attached reflector lens. It automatically adjusts its brightness level, so its projections are clearly visible in direct sunlight or at night. The gadget can project directional arrows, distances, current speed and speed limits on the windscreen while driving.

On the other side, the device offers far more navigation detail than other portable HUD systems, displaying turn indicators, distance to your next turn, current speed and speed limit and estimated time of arrival. That’s not all. HUD lets you know what lane to be in for your next maneuver, as well as alerts you if you exceed the speed limit. It even warns you of potential traffic delays and upcoming safety camera locations.

What you need to do is simply place the transparent film on your windshield or attach the included reflector lens, place HUD onto your vehicle’s dashboard, and pair it wirelessly with your compatible Bluetooth enabled smartphone. Now you just need to choose your destination and HUD will project turn-by-turn directions to get you there. The Garmin HUD will you cost you $129.99 USD. Garmin says the HUD will be available this summer.
