A number of GPS solutions are currently available in the market. With most smartphones equipped with GPS, most people can look for directions on the go. But some may need it more quickly and in a less bulky package than others. To cater to such audience, comprising of athletes and sportsmen, a group of ex-Nokia engineers has unveiled Leikr GPS sports watch.
If you are an athlete and have to take a long training session through the city for an upcoming marathon, you surely don’t want to bring out your smartphone every now and look for directions. The team behind Leikr has apparently decided to resolve this very problem.
Leikr is a fairly smart sports watch which features a 2-inch 320 x 240 color display. The display packs Gorilla Glass, the industry standard for rugged displays. It also has a built-in GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Unlike other smart watches making their debut these days, Leikr is not intended to be used in conjunction with a smartphone. Rather, it can suffice as an effective stand-alone GPS solution. It can store up to 8 GB of OpenStreetMap data which can be more than sufficient for an athlete to navigate within a given area.
The team has also created somewhat of a fitness ecosystem around Leikr so that the watch is able to keep track of your fitness and dietary routine and feed it into an online system. You can also manually upload details about your workout sessions to the online fitness community Endomondo or download regular workout sessions. For now, the watch is made available on KickStarter for $279. If you think you’d want Leikr on your wrist when you run your next marathon, be quick to back the project.
