ARM Claims Its New GPUs Will Deliver Console-Class Gaming

ARM has recently proved its mettle when Samsung decided to go with its Mali 400 GPU for the latest flagship Android release, Galaxy S III. Given the sheer performance of S III, it can be safely said that ARM has packed a powerful punch in its Mali GPU. Now, the company is planning to go a step even further.

ARM has now announced a second generation of Mali chips. It is being touted as the 600 series of Mali chips which will essentially be concentrating on the mobile platform and will attempt to take the graphics processing of mobile devices a notch higher.

In total, the series will comprise of three models – these include the quad-core T624 and the eight-core scalable T628 and T678 GPUs. ARM claims that these processors will be able to enhance the overall performance by up to 50 percent without requiring any additional power!

An extra-ordinary part of ARM’s plan is that it aims to deliver ‘console-class’ gaming with these chips. This essentially means that it will be able to handle 4K and 8K videos quite effectively without affecting the UI performance of the mobile, tablet or the smart TV it will be used in.

While this claim may seem outlandish, it is quite possible. ARM already has unveiled ‘Adaptive Scalable Texture Compression’ (ASTC), a codec that is able to standardize graphics coding across a number of platforms. The best part is that ASTC will be available for free, allowing developers to make extensive use of it. So far, ARM hasn’t given a definite scheduled as to when it intends to release the new family of Mali GPUs but there are hope that they will hit the shelves sometime next year.
