[Review] Temple Run: Oz – The Great And Powerful

Temple Run: Oz is a mash-up of Imangi‘s famous Temple Run game with Sam Raimi‘s newly-released movie Oz: The Great and Powerful. After the smash hit Temple Run: Brave, it’s the second collaboration between Disney Mobile Games and Imangi Studios. Earlier this year, Imangi released Temple Run 2 that brought with it a completely redesigned visuals and the character went around a gently curving path that would occasionally dip and rise, instead of running in a completely straight line as the classic Temple Run. Now, Temple Run: Oz has come with lush and dense environments, brand spanking new worlds and running from angry flying baboons and overall epic feel of the game.

Our Review

In Temple Run: Oz, you are going to take control of a digital approximation of James Franco (OZ) from the inspired movie Oz: The Great and Powerful. Your main focus is to run non-stop as far as you can along the Yellow Brick Road, to avoid flying Baboon (which was demon monkeys in previous version) and obstacles, and to collect coins, gems and music keys along the way.

You will already be more than friendly with Temple Run: Oz’s controlling if you have played Temple Run, Temple Run 2 or Temple Run: Brave. Like the previous Temple Runs, you have to swipe left or right turns, swipe up or down jumps or slide respectively, tap the screen to activate power-ups and you can tilt to move Oz from side to side on the path. That’s all about controlling parts.

When you launch the game, your journey will start with a lush forest scenario which is called Whimsical Woods. There are plenty of obstacles in this forest. You have to dodge tree roots that grow across your path as you approach, wild flowers that snap at you from the sides, pillars crumbling from the side, the ground collapsing in front of you while you’re a few feet away, and a flying Baboon who is following you. At certain time, you will come across Hot Air Balloon pass in front of your way and to have an enjoyable balloon ride, you have to run to the direction of the balloon and then you have to jump forward to catch the balloon. In contrast with the mining cart section, this hot air balloon is completely elective. You can choose when you see the balloon flying in the front of your path. Either you can turn left and go for the balloon ride or turn right and continue normally with the game. This hot-air balloon features to fly through clouds and mountains for coins.

After running a while, the game will give you the option to download the Dark Forest level for free. Once you have enabled the dark forest, the game will give you an option every time to go to the new world at one of the turns. You can take that turn to enter the new world or turn the other path and continue with the current location. The new world starts loading in the background only if you choose to change the level, and you can see a progress bar appeared. After loading the new level, you have to go through a short tunnel with bright flashing lights and at the end of it, you will enter a new level. In this level, you have to run through graveyards, black forest and dark locations. More new locations have been announced to be published within the app soon by Disney.

As like as previous version, you can get power-ups, abilities, and utilities, which you can purchase with coins through the in-game store. A new feature in Power-ups like Finley’s boost, magic magnets and fireworks to attack flying baboons and attract coins. Another new addition is Music Key. Every now and then, you will find some keys which will allow you to open music box later. This music boxes contain more rewards like coins, head start, stumble proof or show pickups. To chose your ability, we recommend you to pick up the Double Coins ability first so that you can earn more from the beginning as well as you can use those for buying some others later. Just like before, you can use gem which will allow you to resurrect yourself if you unexpectedly fall down a ditch, run into a hazard, or fall prey to a flying baboon though you have to pay double every time you extend your short life.

Temple Run: Oz has stunning visual and catchy Oz-based graphics and sounds. Along with brick road, the bridges, balance precariously atop walls, hot air balloon — all seem so perfect, slick and impressive. Stunning environments and the sense of other-worldly exploration and adventure is really appealing for any explorer. Disney used the theme music of Oz-the great and the powerful, which makes the game intense.

Even though the app isn’t free, people who liked the older version of the game will love this endless running game and will not omit their decision to buy. Others should try the game at least for once. Temple Run: Oz is available for $0.99 on apps store. People say, more fun means more addiction to a game. So, from that perspective, this game has exceeded my expectations.
