2012 Macbook Pro To Get New Case Design

According to MacRumors the next MacBook Pro will have a new case design. Take that with a grain of salt, since Apple never officially confirms or denies anything until they have a product to release, and the normal spring revisions that the MacBook Pro normally sees are 10 months away.

The last time the MacBook Pro got a redesign was when we got the unibody version in 2008. The unibody design shed the older brushed aluminum body for one carved from a single piece of metal and then fitted back together with the components inside. It features the same black-bezel highlights of the current iMac design, and traded in the older metallic keys for black spaced keys like the MacBook.

The February 2011 MacBook Pro is an incremental update to the prior aluminum unibody versions we’ve all seen before. Next year is the year when Apple will introduce an all new design for the MacBook Pro product family, which is already under development at Quanta in Taiwan. It’s being described as a big, “milestone” release for the Pro family, as compared with the speed bump features that will be introduced in tomorrow’s models.

It’s entirely unclear what a new MacBook Pro would look like and what changes Apple would make to the design, if any. There’s certainly room for Apple to make the MacBook Pro thinner and lighter than the current version, or to move away from optical drives, or to ditch hard drives for the SSDs that Apple’s been installing in the MacBook Air. Regardless, if the current refresh schedule holds, we won’t hear anything from Apple until early 2012.
