Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 805, Aimed At Bringing 4K Video To Smartphones

With increasingly higher-resolution displays arriving in latest smartphones, it is only a matter of time before Ultra HD 4K video could be seen on mobile devices. To that end, Qualcomm has now created Snapdragon 805, a new processor which can enable a smartphone to play, record and stream truly Ultra HD videos.

Qualcomm Snapdragon

Snapdragon 805 is being touted by Qualcomm as the ‘Ultra HD’ processor. The title is well-earned since the new processor packs Adreno 420 GPU together with the Krait 450 quad-core CPU and a Gobi MDM9x25 modem.

Each of these components contribute significantly to bring the magic of Ultra HD to mobile devices. Adreno 420, for instance, is able to deliver 40% more graphical processing prowess compared to its predecessor. Krait 450 is the first-ever mobile CPU to be clocked at 2.5GHz per core. As the name suggests, Krait 450 packs four cores, each clocked this high and is able to deliver a memory bandwidth support of up to 25.6GB per second.

Finally, Gobi MDM9x25 modem comes with the promise of delivering the highest LTE speeds on a handset. The modem has been found to provide the peak LTE speeds and is already fairly well-known and popular in the mobile arena. Gobi MDM9x25 permits speeds as high as 150Mbps on LTE streaming and 600 Mbps on Wi-Fi streaming.

To top it all up, Qualcomm is using the H.265 codec, meant to lower the power-consumption during HD video playback. A Qualcomm executive sums up the new processor in the following words, ‘Using a smartphone or tablet powered by Snapdragon 805 processor is like having an UltraHD home theater in your pocket, with 4K video, imaging and graphics, all built for mobile.”
