Sorry BlackBerry PlayBook, You’re Not Getting BlackBerry 10

In the past, BlackBerry had announced that it will be bringing its latest mobile OS, the BlackBerry 10, to the ill-fated tablet BlackBerry PlayBook. However, much to the chagrin and utter disappointment of PlayBook users, the company has now announced that the tablet won’t be getting the update after all.

BlackBerry PlayBook

BlackBerry PlayBook doesn’t exactly have a huge user base. But the users who have stuck with the tablet over time, have done so only on the hopes that the company would eventually dish out a better mobile OS to the slates. But these hopes have been dashed in view of the BlackBerry CEO’s recent statement.

According to the company’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, a satisfactory performance of the BlackBerry 10 on PlayBook couldn’t be achieved and thus, the company had decided not to push out the update to PlayBook users. He made the announcement during an investor call today.

At the same time, Heins assured the investors that the company is focusing its energies and resources on the more core BlackBerry products. In his earlier statements, Heins had cited that in his opinion, the tablet market is not here to stay for long and is not at all viable.

In view of his opinions, it is not surprising to see that PlayBook is currently not a priority for BlackBerry. If anything, we may see the company phase out support for the slate altogether in the coming months and focus itself more on the smartphone market.
