US CO2 Emissions Lowest In Last 20 Years

According to a report from the U.S. Energy Information Agency, the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the U.S. has dropped to a 20-year low. The drop comes as surprise to officials and scientists practicing related trade. The main reason behind the surprising drop in carbon dioxide emissions is said to the result of recent shift to natural gas by some power plant operators from coal.

The drop in U.S. carbon dioxide emissions due to a shift to natural gas has been unanticipated by leading climate scientists. Because the shift has not been the result of any government initiatives, rather private initiatives. The low price of natural gases has caused companies shift from dirtier coal.

The question is, will the drop-off sustain? It won’t sustain on natural gas only, warned Roger Pielke Jr., a climate expert at the University of Colorado. Some also worry that cheap natural gas could hurt renewable energy efforts, and ultimately hurting the decrease in overall carbon emissions.
