Gun Control Petition On White House Site Becomes The Most Popular Ever

In the wake of the recent tragic incident at an elementary school in Connecticut which left nearly 27 people dead, including many children, questions have been raised about the lack of gun control in U.S. A petition to prompt legislation on this has now become one of the most popular petitions filed on White House’s website.

Gun control

The petition was launched in the ‘We The People’ section of the website which allows U.S. citizens to launch their petitions, garner support and bring their demands into the notice of the government. The petition in question asks for Congress to immediately launch legislation over the issue of gun control.

As it is, many have blamed the utter lack of gun control in U.S. as the chief reason behind the recent spate of mass killings in different parts of the country. Acquiring a gun is as easy as walking up to a gun store and presenting a legal ID.

Naturally, availability of guns itself is no prompt to violence. Yet no sane person could deny that it becomes a very effective tool for someone who wishes to indulge in violence. And by curbing the availability of guns, this tool can be taken away from such people.

The petition which was created on Dec 14 has already garnered more than 138,000 signatures, which goes on to show its wild popularity. The text of the petition says, “Powerful lobbying groups allow the ownership of guns to reach beyond the Constitution’s intended purpose of the right to bear arms. Therefore, Congress must act on what is stated law, and face the reality that access to firearms reaches beyond what the Second Amendment intends to achieve.”

If you wish to be a part of this movement by signing the petition, you can head straight to the ‘We The People’ page.

You seem very biased in this report – the main problem with such violence, is gun free zones. A tragedy like this plays out over several minutes, so an armed teacher could have taken out this deranged kid quickly. Please STOP blaming it on the guns, it doesn’t make any sense. America’s 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting and everything with the citizenry, like in Switzerland, being the main militia that can be counted on to defend the country from enemies from the outside, or from within… This kid had serious personality issues, and should never have been allowed close to guns. HE was the problem, not the guns. His parents should have known that he couldn’t be trusted.
