The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which oversees top-level domains to IP addresses on the internet, has approved a new set of rules for future domain registrations. Under the new rules, registrars have to verify email address and phone number of domain registrants.
The new rule was approved earlier this week under the Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) by the directors of ICANN. Under the RAA domain registrars would have to verify domain registrants and maintain other information about them. This information includes credit cards used to register the domain, IP address used to sign up for the domain etc. Registrars will have to lend this info if ICANN ever wants them. Registrants will also need to update their contact info within seven days.
The new rules will take affect once all registrars sign it.
