Microsoft’s So.cl Lets User View Each Other’s Search Queries, Create Video Parties

A lot of social networks have launched since the early days of the web and few have lived to popularity and success. While Facebook, the starchild of the social media, rides on a high tide with its near-billion users, Microsoft has launched a social network of its known under the name So.cl. Clearly, an awkward name may not be the only reason it doesn’t sound too interesting.

However, according to Microsoft, the social network hasn’t been designed to compete with Facebook or any other notable social media giants. Rather, So.cl is meant purely to allow students to interact with other students via a network and share information with each other. So in a way, Microsoft is rolling out So.cl as a student-oriented online network.

According to a Microsoft representative, “FUSE Labs’ So.cl project is now accepting all users interested in joining the site. So.cl is an experimental research project focused on the future of social experiences and learning, especially among younger people.”

Another very intriguing feature of So.cl is ‘Feed.’ Just like you get News Feed on Facebook, you have a Feed section on So.cl where you are able to view the search queries the other people on the network are currently using. This means that the search terms that are being used on So.cl are public and viewable by others.

The basic idea behind the network is that by being able to view each other’s search queries and by being able to comment and share them, users will be able to dig information more effectively and easily online. Also in doing so, these users who are going to be students, will be helping each other out.

Another exciting feature of So.cl is the ability for the users to create video parties. A video party allows a user to search and assemble a number of videos which he can then share with friends. You may want to see for yourself what it looks like over here.
