The Internet Has Been Selected For The Nobel Peace Prize 2010: Confirmed

The Nobel Committee has nominated The Internet as the candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize of this year. It’s not a rumor, it’s true. Internet aka Web is called “the weapon of mass construction.” Don’t get surprised if you see “Internet” climb the podium to collect the Nobel Peace Prize award in 2010. The Internet has made the list of nominees going up against a Chinese dissident and a Russian human rights activist among others.

there were some questions last year as to why United States President Barack H. Obama had won the Nobel Prize, but a nominee for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize will surely raise more conversation. But to me it’s fair enough. The Internet has virtually revolutionized the world and broke the walls of censorship quite often.

It was the Italian edition of the Wired magazine which came with the idea, thus making Internet the first inanimate object getting the recognition. Wired reportedly nominated Internet for promoting “dialogue, debate and consensus through communication” as well as democracy, according to a PTI report.

As part of the campaign, ‘Wired Italy’ has also launched a dedicated campaign, ‘Internet for Peace’ (www.internetforpeace.org/), which will carry on till September 2010, featuring different stories and experiences of those who with the web have tried to do something concrete to promote peace and harmony in the world.

The project’s ambassadors include: the Nobel Peace Prize winner Shrin Ebadi, the first signatory of the manifesto; Prof Umberto Veronesi, scientist; Giorgio Armani, fashion designer; Wired Italia Editor Riccardo Luna among others.

The inanimate entity will be competing against a human rights group from Russia, and a Chinese dissident. It’s surely quite strange that the Internet has been nominated for the prize. After all, it doesn’t belong to any one person, and is essentially everywhere on Earth.

“The internet can be considered the first weapon of mass construction, which we can deploy to destroy hate and conflict and to propagate peace and democracy,” Riccardo Luna, editor-in-chief of the Italian edition of Wired magazine opined.

Besides using the instance of Iraq elections to establish how Internet could be used as a ‘weapon of global hope’, the magazine went on to say how it can be used for terrorism and warfare to prove the power of the media.

“We have to look at the Internet as a huge community where men and women from all over the world and with very different religious views can communicate and sympathise, spreading a new culture centred on collaboration and sharing of knowledge that breaks all barriers,” said Wired Italy.

The Internet is the first ‘inanimate’ or non human nomination in the awards history.

In his will of 1895, prize founder Alfred Nobel commented that “peace prize should reward efforts to promote fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies.”

Legitimate or not, it’s unlikely that the Nobel Committee would choose such an unlikely winner this year: as the AP reports, last year’s pick of Barack Obama proved controversial given his short time in office. This year’s choice is likely to be a conservative one.

So, do you want to see the revolutionary net bagging the coveted prize? It’s your turn to be part of the campaign.

What do you think of this nomination? Has the Internet changed your life in any way? Do let me know through your comments.
