Over the past few years, hackers around the globe have grown increasingly sophisticated. Concerted cyberattacks have been launched against different countries and now, Finland has made it to the list. It has been revealed that the country’s government data network was hit with a ‘severe and large’ hacking attack earlier this year.
The hacking was meant to intercept critical data between top functionaries. This ‘tapping’ had been going on for quite some time, as the Finnish government later stated. According to the country’s foreign minister, Erkki Tuomioja, the hack was finally detected in spring 2013 after which the government launched a thorough investigation into the matter.
He further cited that this was evidently a case of ‘serious espionage’ meant to gather intelligence on the country. As such, the hackers were able to access the communications of the foreign ministry and listen in on the conversations between Finnish officials and their counterparts in the European Union.
While these conversation did form classified information, Tuomioja assured that none of the highly classified documents were compromised during this hack. So far, the country hasn’t pointed any fingers or named any definite culprits.
But numerous media outlets in Finland have been hinting that Russian and Chinese intelligence agents may have been responsible for this entire operation. When it comes to international espionage, China has been repeatedly accused of abetting and harboring hackers who would launch cyber attacks on other countries, although the country has repeatedly denied the charge. It remains to be seen if any proof could be gathered to implicate any country in this recent Finnish episode.
