5.9-magnitude strong Earthquake shakes eastern Turkey: Latest news of the Turkey Earthquake

A strong earthquake has struck eastern Turkey, killing five people, Turkish authorities say.

Gov. Muammer Erol says the victims are from the small village of Okcular.

The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory says the quake occurred at 4:32 a.m. (0232 GMT) Monday. It was followed by an aftershock measuring 4.1.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the North Anatolian fault.

Deadly earthquakes take place rather frequently in Turkey, which is crossed by several active fault-lines. Two powerful tremors in the heavily populated northwest claimed about 20,000 lives in August and November 1999.
